New report claims Lumia 900 sales may be petering out

When the Lumia 900 smartphone from Nokia was launched in the US in April, it was accompanied by a massive ad campaign and, at least for the first few weeks, high sales. Indeed, the Windows Phone device was hard to find at first; AT&T"s online store had problems keeping the Lumia 900 in stock.

It"s been less than two months since the Lumia 900"s US launch, but a new report at News.com quotes data from Compete that shows that sales of the Lumia 900 have now slowed. Compete claims that in May, online orders for the Lumia 900 have dropped below that of the older Samsung Galaxy S II and even older Windows Phone devices like the Samsung Focus and the HTC Titan.

At the moment, Amazon.com shows the black version of the Lumia 900 at the number six position in terms of sales of cell phones with service; the cyan colored version of the Lumia 900 is well behind in 25th place.

Neither Nokia nor AT&T would give specifics on the current sales of the Lumia 900. Nokia spokesperson Keith Nowak is quoted as saying that the company is " ... pleased with the consumer reaction, as well as the support we have received from AT&T." Scott Anderson, vice president of the connectivity business group for Best Buy, was a little more optimistic, saying, "The Nokia 900 is selling pretty well, but it wasn"t poised to be a blockbuster device. It"s a solid seller, but that"s it."

The article points out that the marketing for the Lumia 900 by AT&T will likely go away soon thanks to the launch of the Samsung Galaxy S III in the US later this month. Anderson claims that the Galaxy S III could break smartphone pre-order records at Best Buy.
