Three years after making its debut, it is being reported that Apple Music has surpassed Spotify’s paid U.S. subscriber count.
The news comes via Digital Music News from a confidential source who shared a report with subscriber numbers for streaming services like Apple Music, Spotify, Tidal, and more. According to the report, Apple Music currently holds the top spot in the United States with over 20 million subscribers. This general figure also rings true for Spotify, but the source didn"t want exact numbers revealed, in order to protect their identity. From what can also be seen from the data, Apple is growing at a stronger rate in the U.S. This could indicate that it will widen the gap in the months to come, further surpassing its competition.
This new growth would put Apple"s global subscriber total at over 45 million. In April, it was reported that the company surpassed 40 million paid subscribers. This is still well under Spotify"s global numbers that put it at more than 70 million paid subscribers. While all of this is well and good, one can only wonder how well Google can compete, especially since it just launched its upgraded music service, YouTube Music.
