Earlier this week, the Internet was all abuzz about a comment from a team member from Microsoft that seemed to finally confirm that the company was working on the next hardware version of the Xbox game console. Brian Hall, the general manager of Windows Live, chatted with The Verge and at one point included "the new Xbox" as part of a wave of new products that Microsoft was planning to launch in the near future.
We poked fun of these reports, as Microsoft is almost certainly making a new Xbox game console. As a result, we thought that these stories fell into the "Captain Obvious" category. Heck, someone recently tried to sell a hardware SDK for the next Xbox.
As it turns out, Microsoft is doing some damage control and is now saying that Hall"s comment about "the new Xbox" was not, in fact, referring to a new hardware console after all. In a statement to The Verge, Microsoft said:
The comments to The Verge were not understood in their intended context When Brian mentioned a ‘new wave of products,’ he was referring to the full lineup of products coming later this year from Microsoft, including Windows 8, Office, Windows Phone and of course our fall Xbox update which will bring a host of new consumer experiences like Xbox Music, Videos, Games on Windows 8 and Xbox SmartGlass.
So there you have it. Despite tons of evidence that Microsoft is hard at work on the launch of the next Xbox, the company is still officially keeping quiet on this subject.
