One of the largest online media outlets has apparently had enough of the Blackberry operating system, at least for now. This week, the New York Times cut off support for its native Blackberry app and it also cut off its app support for the now discontinued Palm Pre smartphone.
In a page on the company"s website, The New York Times says, "Currently, our mobile Web site offers a more complete New York Times experience than the NYTimes app native to your device. We’ve made the decision to consolidate our efforts and concentrate on delivering you the best possible experience through our mobile site."
This is yet another blow to Blackberry maker Research in Motion, which has seen its smartphone devices lose market share to the iPhone and Android OS-based devices in the past couple of years. The New York Times has dedicated apps for both iOS and Android, along with one for Windows Phone.
However, The New York Times might end up making an app for Blackberry 10. RIM is currently scheduled to launch the OS, along with the first Blackberry 10 smartphone, sometime in the first quarter of 2013. Reuters reports that company spokeswoman Eileen Murphy said, "That decision has not been made, and it"s entirely possible that we might."
