Nexus Player reaches the end of the road, as Google pulls it from its store

Google unveiled the Nexus Player in October 2014, as one of its "showcase" devices for Android 5.0 Lollipop - but its retail life is now over, as the company has removed it from its store.

Manufactured by ASUS, and priced at $99, the Nexus Player was an Android TV box designed to show off the capabilities of Google"s entertainment-focused platform. It came with its own remote control which included a microphone for voice search functions on the device, and an optional gaming controller was also offered for $39.

But as Droid Life spotted today, the Nexus Player is no longer listed on the Google Store, and many major retailers have also been sold out for several weeks, or even months, in some cases.

The device remains one of only a handful to be officially supported by Android N Developer Previews so far, the most recent of which was released at Google"s I/O developer conference last week.

It"s not yet clear if Google plans to offer a new version of the Nexus Player, but there are plenty of other Android TV options to choose from these days. Xiaomi"s upcoming Mi Box is one such example; featuring support for HDR and 4K resolution, it will launch this year in various markets including the US.
