Last August, Nintendo announced the NES Classic Edition, with 30 retro games preloaded for $59.99. While it launched in November, it was nearly impossible to find in retail stores or online, unless you were willing to pay extra on sites like eBay. Eventually, the console was discontinued, with many potential customers never having a chance to buy one.
But today, the firm announced the Super NES Classic, which as the name implies, is a mini version of the Super NES console. It"s a bit pricier at $79.99 though, and it only contains 21 games:
-
Contra III: The Alien Wars
-
Donkey Kong Country
-
EarthBound
-
Final Fantasy III
-
F-ZERO
-
Kirby Super Star
-
Kirby’s Dream Course
-
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
-
Mega Man X
-
Secret of Mana
-
Star Fox
-
Star Fox 2
-
Street Fighter II Turbo: Hyper Fighting
-
Super Castlevania IV
-
Super Ghouls ’n Ghosts
-
Super Mario Kart
-
Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
-
Super Mario World
-
Super Metroid
-
Super Punch-Out!!
-
Yoshi’s Island
One title that might stand out to you is Star Fox 2; as Nintendo points out in its announcement, the game was developed during the SNES era but was never released.
Another thing that might justify the larger price tag is that it comes with two controllers, whereas the NES Classic only came with one. Along with the console and controllers, a USB charging cable, AC adapter, and HDMI cable will be found in the box.
The Super NES Classic will be available on September 29, with information about retailers coming soon. If Nintendo decides to allow pre-orders in the US this time around, you should get yours in as soon as possible, as the item will likely be in short supply again.
Update: Nintendo also announced a European model, which has the same games, will be available on the same date, and doesn"t come with an AC adapter. The company didn"t announce pricing.
