Last week, Nintendo confirmed that it has discontinued the NES Classic Edition, which was devastating news for the many potential customers that wanted one but had never actually seen one on a store shelf. Indeed, the console has been sold out pretty much everywhere since launch, and it"s odd that a company would discontinue something that"s in such high demand.
But as it turns out, the firm might have been making room for a new product. According to a report from Eurogamer, Nintendo is working on an SNES mini console, which should be on store shelves (or more likely, not available unless you"re willing to pay more on eBay) this holiday season.
That"s about all we know about what seems likely to be called the SNES Classic Edition. You can be sure that the classic games will be there, such as Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past, and Super Punch-Out.
It"s unclear at this time if Nintendo will work out some of the shortcomings of last year"s NES Classic Edition, most notably the supply issues. Some might also be hoping for the company to include support for its Virtual Console, which allows users to purchase, download, and play additional classic games.
We"ll find out more in the coming months, as if it"s anything like last year, the company will want to build up hype with a summer announcement.
