Nintendo: NX console isn't successor to Wii U, it's 'an entirely new idea'

Nintendo hasn’t exactly had the easiest time as of late, with the company struggling to turn a profit and push its IP and games. But the company’s new management has a plan to turn all of that around and it’s mostly based on mobile apps.

After taking the world by storm with its Wii console, Nintendo misstepped and the company soon found itself in trouble, as its Wii U flopped and its 3DS failed to have as big of an impact as the company was hoping for. That’s why Nintendo is now focusing on the future and looking to make things right with its fans.

And as part of that strategy, the company has big plans for its mobile games. After partnering with DeNA and announcing the upcoming launch of Miitomo, a game likely based around social interactions, Nintendo is doubling down and promising to release other games with famous characters like Mario and Link before the end of the year.

The company is also focusing on its upcoming NX console and Tatsumi Kimishima, the company’s new president, gave the world an interesting hint about the upcoming device. In a written piece, Kimishima explained that the NX won’t be a “successor” to the Wii U; instead it will be “something that is based on an entirely new idea”. Oftentimes, Nintendo is at its best when trying completely new things so this move may prove to be quite fortuitous for the company.

Unfortunately, there’s still a ways to go before we learn more about the upcoming NX and we get to try out Nintendo’s mobile games, the first of which is expected in March.
