Nintendo will not include an AC adapter with its new 3DS XL citing cost concerns

The new Nintendo 3DS XL will be coming to the United States in February. But, what Nintendo hasn"t told you is that your brand new handheld console will be lacking an AC adapter.

So why isn"t Nintendo including an AC adapter with its latest console? According to a representative from Nintendo:

Rather than raise cost of New Nintendo 3DS XL by charging consumers for a component they may already own, we are giving them the option to only buy if they need an AC adapter.

While this might sound like a reasonable justification, many buyers will no doubt consider this unacceptable. If you purchase a device that requires a proprietary charging cable, it seems reason to expect that it will be included in the box. Many would contend that Nintendo should not be charging extra for this cable or forcing customers to purchase this adapter separately.

For those that have owned a previous handheld console from Nintendo, there is a small silver lining as all previous Nintendo DS (excluding the original DS) power adapters will function with the new 3DS XL.

Although this could change in future iterations of the device, this is clearly a controversial tactic for Nintendo. What are your thoughts?
