Nintendo's Switch new online service offers a free monthly game, but it's really a rental

There"s a lot to take in about the Nintendo Switch - it"s a new console that will also arrive with an entirely new online service. This is a first for the company who for years offered a lackluster online experience with its Wii, Wii U, 3DS and more. When the Switch launches, the service will be offered as a free trial with a paid service launching later in the year. Like other paid online services, like Xbox Live or PlayStation Plus, there is the added benefit of a free monthly game download. Unfortunately, it appears that the free title will work a bit differently than its competitors offerings.

According to Nintendo"s subscription service, the subscriber will be able to download and play a retro title "for free for a month". This part is important because it clearly states that while the title will be free, it will only be available for play for one month"s time. After a month, the title will be plucked from your library and a new title will be offered.

The only way to retain the title in your library permanently is to purchase it. While this might not be a huge deal, it is a bit disappointing considering that the competition is offering so much more. With a few months to go and an official roll out of the service several months away, there is a possibility that Nintendo could change their service offerings.
