The extremely busy cyber hacking group LulzSec has apparently struck again and this time the target was game console maker Nintendo. According to a report on the Reuters news service, Nintendo did confirm that its servers located in the United States came under cyber attack "several weeks ago". However, unlike the attack on Sony"s Playstation Network service. Nintendo claims that no personal infomation was taken by the hackers.
The hacker group LulzSec took responsibility for the Nintendo attack in a message on their Twitter web site. While it claimed that it did take one file from Nintendo"s servers it added that "we didn"t mean any harm. Nintendo had already fixed it anyway." LulzSec has claimed responsibility for a number of cyber attacks in the past week, including defacing the PBS.org news site, taking personal info from the Sony Pictures and Sony BMG web sites and attacking a site owned by InfraGard, a company that has some kind of link with the FBI.
It"s currently unknown why Nintendo didn"t reveal the hack attack on its US servers before today. The company did say in a statement, "The server contained no consumer information. The protection of our customer information is our utmost priority. We constantly monitor our security." Of course this news comes on the heels of Sony restoring its Playstation Network after a cyber attack caused Sony to shut it down on April 20.
Nintendo is due to make a major announcement on Tuesday when it will reveal more details about its next generation game console during a pre-E3 press conference in Los Angeles.
