No new Windows 10 build before late February; more info on Phone preview

Yesterday’s launch of the preview version of Windows 10 for phones left many users unsatisfied, as only a limited number of devices are currently eligible for the test build. However, we now have further info on when the next builds will come and what the process will be like going forward.

@avladd That is our intent yes. Bugs are always possible. This is a technical preview.

First of all you can rest easy knowing that Microsoft is working hard to ensure that preview builds will get continuously updated until the RTM version. So, if everything goes according to plan, users will never have to roll-back their devices to a previous version and will be updated to the final version once it ships.

@chrisinfinland Roughly, we expect new preview builds monthly (and sometimes perhaps faster) from here on out.

Secondly, we finally have a rough timeline of future updates. According to Gabriel Aul, head of the Insider program, the team is scheduled to push out monthly builds or even faster than that, as we move closer to a finalized version of the OS.

Unfortunately, there’s no news on which devices will be supported in the next wave of previews, and that’s mainly because the team doesn’t know yet. However, we will hopefully find out before the actual launch.

Most of this info was already confirmed for the desktop version of Windows 10, but it’s good to have it in writing, that Microsoft is aiming for the same goals on the mobile platform.

@callum90ish @thekotpsot No :-) We don"t expect to do another PC build tomorrow or following week, but do expect another WU update next week

Finally Gabe Aul mentioned the upcoming preview build for desktops, which many expected to be released soon after the phone preview. Unfortunately, it looks like Insiders may have to wait a bit longer as a new build isn’t expected before the last week of February.

However, a Windows Update update will be pushed out next week in preparation for that. The patch will move everyone to the fbl_impressive branch of builds, which will be the one used going forward.

All in all this sounds like good news to us and we’re excited see what Microsoft has planned for the future.
