No pre-order necessary: Microsoft's Xbox One S officially goes on sale for $399

In June, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One S, its latest console with support for high dynamic range and 4K / Ultra HD video. Soon after its announcement, Microsoft opened pre-orders for the device, starting with the 2TB Launch Edition, priced at $399.

The company began shipping those pre-orders over the weekend, and today, the Xbox One S is officially on sale. You can now buy the new console via the Microsoft Store, and other retailers such as Amazon.com, without having pre-ordered or registered - but the 2TB model remains the only one available for now.

If 2TB of storage is overkill for you, the first bundles of the more affordable versions of the console can be pre-ordered. The 1TB model costs $349, while the 500GB is the cheapest of the bunch, priced at $299. Shipments of those bundles will begin on August 23.

The Xbox One S is a good deal smaller than the original Xbox One, which was released in November 2013. It also supports vertical orientation, unlike its predecessor which had to be positioned horizontally.
