Nokia: 808 Pureview to be released in the US unlocked

In February, Nokia shocked the smartphone industry when it announced the 808 Pureview, a smartphone equipped with a 41 megapixel camera. Unfortunately, the company also confirmed at the time that the smartphone would not be released in the US. Now it looks like US residents will be able to get the 808 Pureview after all.

PCMag.com reports that in a chat with Nokia"s US head Chris Weber, he confirms that the company is working to bring an unlocked version of the 808 Pureview to this territory. He states, "We"ll figure out a way to make that available in the U.S. in the next couple of months."

Weber didn"t disclose a price point, but an unlocked version likely means that the 808 Pureview will have a rather high introductory price in the US. While a local wireless carrier won"t be selling the smartphone, Weber did say that the 808 Pureview will be able to sign onto AT&T"s network when it is released in this country.

Nokia is still concentrating its US efforts on selling its Lumia family of Windows Phone-based devices. However, there have been hints that the 41 megapixel technology found in the 808 Pureview could be coming to future Nokia-made Windows Phone products.
