The long legal war between Nokia and HTC has come to an end. A few days after a German court ruled that HTC had infringed on one of Nokia"s patents, the two companies announced that they have settled all litigation between them and have also entered into a new patent and technology license agreement.
Nokia"s press release states:
HTC will make payments to Nokia and the collaboration will involve HTC"s LTE patent portfolio, further strengthening Nokia"s licensing offering. The companies will also explore future technology collaboration opportunities.
Naturally, the specific terms of this new Nokia-HTC partnership were not disclosed. The two companies have been in and out of court since 2012 in the UK and Germany, with Nokia accusing HTC of violating their patents. In another recent example, a UK court agreed with Nokia that the HTC One mini was using one of its patents and ruled that the smartphone be banned for sale in that country.
The agreement comes just a few weeks before Nokia is expected to complete the sale of its Devices and Services division, which includes its smartphone hardware business, to Microsoft. Nokia and HTC have been the two biggest hardware OEMs for Windows Phone.
