Nokia announced its financial results for the first quarter of the year today, and despite selling 5.6m Lumia Windows Phones - 4m of which were Windows Phone 8 handsets, with the remainder made up of effectively obsolete Windows Phone 7.x devices - the company still reported a loss of €150m.
New products will be key to dragging the company back into the black, and on that front, the outlook is good. In an earnings will investors today, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop dropped a huge hint about the imminent launch of the Lumia 928, stating that "later this quarter, a new Lumia device is anticipated to have hero status with a leading US carrier." Earlier today, we reported that the 928, a variant of the Lumia 920 flagship destined for Verizon in the US, could be announced as soon as next week.
Elop added that this new device is set to "mark the beginning of a season of new production introductions", which certainly lines up with what we"ve been hearing lately.
This week, more details emerged on a new handset known by its development codename "EOS", which is expected to feature a high-end PureView camera and possibly a quad-core chipset. Yesterday, the first images surfaced of another new Lumia known as "Catwalk", which will feature a sleek and light aluminium body.
