Nokia is the overwhelming Windows Phone global market share leader, according to a new study. The study also shows the company also leads in U.S. market share, although by a much smaller margin. In addition to Nokia and HTC, Samsung also maintains a substantial share in both markets.
According to a study by Localytics, first noticed by AllThingsD, Nokia has a 59 percent share of the global Windows Phone market. Nokia is followed by HTC at 21 percent, Samsung at 13 percent and all other device manufacturers at 7 percent. Since January, Nokia has steadily increased its global Windows Phone market share while HTC has seen its market share significantly decrease over the same period of time.
In the U.S. Windows Phone market, HTC is the dominant smartphone manufacturer, with 36 percent of the Windows Phone market. Nokia is close behind at 32 percent, followed by Samsung at 26 percent and all other device manufacturers at 6 percent. Though it"s second in the U.S. market, Nokia has also steadily increased its market share in this territory as well.
Despite Nokia"s dominance in the Windows Phone market, it continued to lose money last quarter, although the company is hopeful Windows Phone 8 will reverse its money-losing trend. Additionally, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop recently reaffirmed the company"s commitment to the Windows Phone platform.
Microsoft and Nokia are expected to announce the first Windows Phone 8 devices at a press conference on Sept. 5. The announcement of a press conference came following leaked pictures of a device purported to be Nokia"s first Windows Phone 8 handset, rumored to be called the Nokia Phi.
