Nokia Lumia 800 goes on sale in the UK

Customers across the UK and Europe will today be able to get their hands on the Nokia Lumia 800. The Lumia 800 is available from Three, Vodafone, Orange and T-Mobile, and the prices of the device vary depending on which contract you take out with the various carriers, in Europe a price had already been announced of 420 Euros (without contract).

Originally the device was going to be made available to O2 customers as well, but talks broke down with O2 having issues with Nokia"s terms for the devices, claiming they were too severe for the operator in terms of stock levels, sales volumes, store displays and marketing campaigns.

As reported here just over two weeks ago, the Lumia 800 comes in three colors (black, cyan and magenta), a 3.7-inch display, a 1.4 GHz single-core processor, 512 MB of RAM, a 8 megapixel rear camera and 16 GB of internal storage. The Lumia 800 also comes with Windows Phone 7.5 Mango, and features 16GB of built in storage, 802.11 b/g/n WiFi and GPS.

Nokia has pulled out the big guns with a massive marketing campaign for the Lumia 800 in the UK, including some rather odd television commercials and strange marketing stunts that includes putting fake saunas in bus stops. At least one phone carrier in the UK, Orange, will also be giving away a free Xbox 360 with the pre-purchase of a Lumia 800.

Winrumors is also reporting that only the black version was available this morning at Oxford Street’s Three store, and has all but sold out already:

Oxford Street’s Three store opened at 8AM on Wednesday and by 9AM there were only nine handsets left according to a Nokia UK spokesperson. Nokia handed out free gifts, chocolate and coffee to those in the queue at the Three and Phones4U stores in Oxford Street. Any devices purchased between 8AM and 12PM on the Three network will get a £30 bill credit as part of the launch activities.
