In May, Verizon Wireless launched its latest Nokia Windows Phone 8 smartphone with the exclusive Nokia Lumia 928. At the time, Verizon sold the smartphone for $99 with a new two year contract.
On Monday, Verizon permanently lowered the price of the Lumia 928 to free, again with a two year contract, less than three months after it was introduced. Verizon even used the free price point for the phone in a new commercial that began running on US TV networks on Monday night, which shows that the company is still highly supportive of the phone and of Windows Phone 8 in particular.
Just a reminder: the Lumia 928 is Verizon"s variant on the older Lumia 920, with a 4.5 inch display, a 1.5 GHz dual core processor, 1 GB of RAM and 32 GB of on-board storage. The smartphone"s biggest selling point is its 8.7 inch PureView rear camera which Nokia has promoted quite a bit in the last few months, showing that its low light images are superior to photos taken with the iPhone 5 and Galaxy S4.
Nokia has already announced that it plans to offer its advanced Pro Camera software package that"s included with the Nokia Lumia 1020 to the Lumia 920, 925 and 928 devices via a future software update, which will give owners of the now free smartphone even more extra value.
By the way, the older Verizon version of the HTC 8X, which also runs on Windows Phone 8, is now free with a two year contract.
