A Nokia spokesperson confirmed today that the company has reached a deal with Oracle who will incorporate Nokia"s mapping and location technology into their products. The deal is expected to be made public tomorrow at the OracleWorld event that"s taking place in San Francisco.
Oracle is only the latest company to become a Nokia client and adopt their location service following the likes of Yahoo, and Amazon. Hell, even Apple recommends using Nokia maps. And even though it"s quite big news, the switch isn"t completely surprising. Especially considering that Oracle and Google, whose maps they used until now, were in a huge trial not too long ago.
Oracle won"t bring a huge number of news user nor pour large amounts of cash in Nokia"s coffers, but it will provide some interesting opportunities for them due to their enterprise business.
Nokia bought Navteq back in 2007 and ever since have been trying to expand its reach and features. More recently they have partened with Groupon to incorporate their info into Nokia maps. And let"s not forget about the huge collaboration going on between them and Microsoft. All windows phones will be using their location services, not to mention the special features coming to the Lumia line.
Stephen Elop, Nokia"s CEO, has stated time and time again how he wants Nokia to become the "where" company. And with the slew of recent clients, coupled with Google"s ever more restrictive policies regarding their own mapping system, it would seem Nokia is becoming the go to company in terms of location services.
