The Lumia range of phones was unveiled to the world almost a year ago, and after some teething problems with Windows Phone 7.0, it appeared likely that the first generation Lumias would not be getting a meaningful update and fall by the wayside.
Sexy updates for a sexy looking phone, on the way.
Although the first generations of Lumias will not receive the Windows Phone 8.0 update, Nokia has now put to bed any rumors that those phones will be left behind in terms of new features and continued updates.
In a blog posting over at Conversations by Nokia, Boc Ly outlined plans for the first generation Lumias which will also include the Windows Phone 7.8 update. Nokia has recently released Nokia Counters, Nokia PlayTo, Nokia City Lens as well as updates for Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive, and the following features will also be coming to existing Lumia owners,
- A new Start screen look and feel, familiar from Windows Phone 8, giving you a whole new look the moment you unlock your phone
- Ringtone maker app to selected markets to create a personal ringtone
- Contact share app updated to support sharing over Bluetooth in addition to SMS and email
- Bluetooth file transfer to send media files via Bluetooth from your Lumia device to any other phone
Ly also announced exclusive apps coming to existing Lumia owners, such as the Bloomberg news hub and Draw Something app.
And well, if you needed more proof that Nokia is serious about continued support for those Lumias, observe the following statement from the Nokia announcement:
After introducing the first smartphones in the Nokia Lumia family to be built on Windows Phone 8, there is one message that needs to be made loud and clear: existing Lumia owners also have plenty to look forward to and are definitely not being left behind.
Good times indeed.
