Nokia prices its new Ozo virtual reality camera at $60,000

Since offloading its devices and services business onto Microsoft last year, Nokia hasn"t entirely turned its back on hardware - but it is doing things very differently this time around. Its first Android tablet, the N1, is built, sold and supported by Foxconn - and the Finnish firm has said it is seeking a similar arrangement for its new smartphone, due next year.

But earlier this year, Nokia unveiled a very different type of device: the Ozo. A surprising departure from the company"s mobile hardware, the Ozo is a virtual reality camera designed for content creators and movie makers - and now it finally has an official price tag.

The device will be priced at $60,000 when shipments begin in Q1 2016. That might sound like a lot of money for a camera, but this is highly specialized professional equipment, not intended for the casual buyer.

Despite Nokia"s efforts in creating a virtual reality camera, don"t expect it to come to market with its own Oculus-style VR headset. Paul Melin, Nokia VP of digital media, told SlashGear that the company has "no plans to enter the head-mounted display business", but intends "to partner with the entire ecosystem and be compatible with all platforms."

A range of Ozo accessories will also be offered, including a combined battery module with attached 500GB SSD "media module", which can capture around 45 minutes of footage at 30fps, priced at $5,000.
