Nokia to stop selling Symbian phones in North America

Nokia"s much hyped move to launch smartphones based on Microsoft"s Windows Phone 7 operating system is going to happen sometime this fall. But before that happens, Nokia will stop selling its feature phones and phones based on its own Symbian in-house OS in the US and Canada. In a chat with AllThingsDigital.com, Nokia president Chris Weber said, "When we launch Windows Phones we will essentially be out of the Symbian business, the S40 business, etc. It will be Windows Phone and the accessories around that. The reality is if we are not successful with Windows Phone, it doesn’t matter what we do (elsewhere)."

It does sound like Nokia is pretty much going all in with its commitment with both Microsoft and with Windows Phone 7. In fact, Weber says that Nokia plans a massive marketing campaign to help sell its first Windows Phone 7 devices. He says, "Without getting into numbers, it is significantly larger than anything we have done in the past and the most we will invest in any market worldwide. They are putting their money where their mouth is."

While Nokia is prepping for its Windows Phone 7 launch in the States, a phone that is supposed to be launched in Europe won"t be sold here in the US after all. Engadget reports that the N9, which uses the MeeGoo operating system, won"t make it here in the US. The article also has speculation that the N9 might not be released in the UK as well.
