You might not have heard of the "Asha" range of phones, but for Nokia, they"re a big asset to have. The sub-brand is intended for "developing markets", in countries where mobile phones had not yet made a massive impact. For instance, the Asha 501 was announced in New Delhi, India only last month.
When the words "feature phone" are uttered, you automatically expect a cheap little device that couldn"t hold a candle to a smartphone. Nokia doesn"t seem to agree; their new Asha 501 is a break from the norm and they"re keen to give it some presence.
The dubstep-laden advert for the Asha 501 was first shared on Nokia"s official Facebook page, and in the 30-second teaser you get a good look at the phone.
The company has also shared specifications via their website, but in a nutshell the 501 has a QVGA 3" display, Micro SIM support, sub-100g weight, 3.2MP camera and power coming from Nokia"s classic BL-4J battery. The OS is identified as "Asha software platform" as opposed to Windows Phone; it definitely won"t be Symbian.
Nokia made a point of showing off the different colors available; a trend that began with their Lumia line. For those interested, the track used is a Nokia ringtone.
