Nokia raised quite a few eyebrows a few weeks ago, when it unveiled its new N1 tablet, running Android 5.0 Lollipop, along with its Z Launcher app. The Finnish company"s brand licensing agreement with Microsoft - following the sale of its devices and services business last year - has now expired, allowing Nokia to use its brand on a new wave of devices.
Nokia licensed its brand to Foxconn to develop, build and distribute the new N1 tablet. The device combines unibody aluminium construction with a pretty decent set of specs, at a much lower price tag than some may have expected.
Nokia said in November that the device would launch first in China for around $249 USD, and true to its word, the company has now opened pre-orders for the N1 there, priced at 1,599 CNY (around $257 at the current exchange rate).
Key specs of the tablet include:
- 7.9-inch display with 2048x1536px resolution
- Quad-core 2.3GHz Intel Atom 64-bit Z3580 processor
- 2GB DDR3 (800MHz) RAM
- 32GB storage
- 8MP rear camera with autofocus
- 5MP front-facing camera with fixed focus
- microUSB class C
- 5300mAh battery
- 200.7 x 138.6 x 6.9mm; 318g
It"s not yet clear exactly when the N1 will become available in other parts of the world - Nokia has so far only said that it intends to launch the tablet in some European markets "later in the year".
