Nook app for Windows 8 gets major upgrade

While Barnes and Noble will no longer make its own Nook tablets in the future, development of the Nook app for Windows 8 and RT devices continues at full speed. Today, the bookseller announced a major new version of the app is now available to download from the Windows Store.

The most noticeable change in the new version is a revamped UI which Barnes and Noble says will make searching and browsing in the Nook app easier. Other new features include being able to highlight words, adding notes to eBooks, finding specific words or phrases and looking up definitions of words.

The new 1.5 version of the Nook app now allows users to load any PDF or ePub documents to read inside the app and allows for background downloads of books while reading or even using other apps. It also brings up the Windows 8 search charm to find specific search strings in the Nook library.

Barnes and Noble"s press release also alerts Nook Windows 8 app users to some special offers on eBooks and magazine subscriptions. Some eBook titles such as "Outliers: The Story of Success," "Freakonomics," "Bitter Brew: The Rise and Fall of Anheuser-Busch and America"s Kings of Beer," "The Hit," and "Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV" are priced at 50 percent off their normal prices for a limited time. The same goes for subscriptions to National Geographic, Us Weekly, Rolling Stone, Men"s Health and Wired.
