Barnes and Noble seem to be ready to fight to keep the audience for its Nook tablet devices. Today, the bookseller quietly reduced the price of its older 8 GB Nook Color and the 8 and 16 GB Nook tablet devices.
The company"s official site shows that the Nook Color now sells for $149, a price cut of $20. The 8 GB version of the Nook Tablet now sells for $179, again a price reduction of $20. The 16 GB Nook Tablet got the biggest price cut today. You can purchase it now for $199, down $50 from its previous price.
While there"s been no comment from the company about the price cuts, many are speculating that Barnes and Noble wanted to better compete with the recently launched Nexus 7 tablet from Google. That device sells for $199 for the 8 GB version and $249 for the 16 GB version. However, the Nexus 7 has a quad core Tegra processor inside (the Nook Tablet has a dual core chip) and runs on Android 4.1 (The Nook Tablet has a modified version of Android 2.3).
It"s also possible that Barnes and Noble is setting the stage for the reveal of an all new Nook tablet device with better hardware and features. With the fall/holiday shopping season getting closer, we should see a lot of new tablet announcements in the coming weeks.
