Nothing, the tech startup founded by former OnePlus co-founder Carl Pei, teased its first product, the Ear 1 earbuds, in May. At that time, very little was known about the product, except that it could have a transparent look as suggested by a concept design released by the company in March.
Today, Pei revealed more details about the earbuds including their price and release date. In an interview with TechCrunch, Nothing"s founder said the Ear 1 will cost $99 (€99 in the EU and £99 in the UK). It will feature noise cancellation courtesy of three "high definition" mics built into the earbuds.
Pei also positioned the upcoming earbuds as a competitor to Apple’s AirPods Pro, which costs $249. While wireless earbuds have become one of the most commonplace tech products these days, Nothing previously noted that this market presents a huge opportunity for growth and requires differentiation. The Ear 1 will be released initially in the UK, India, Europe, and North America. In the future, the earbuds will launch in Japan, Korea, and other territories.
Pei also clarified that the Ear 1 won"t use any technology from Essential, the startup company founded by Andy Rubin and acquired by Nothing. The company, noted for its first and only smartphone, the PH-1, shut down in early 2020.
