The NPD Group, the top game-industry research firm has released figures of the total amount spent on video game products in the United States during May. The company has revealed that US consumers shelled out $823.5 million on games, hardware and accessories over the course of the month.
A total of $241.5 million was spent on video game hardware during the month of May. The period saw an average price points of $180 for the Nintendo DS, $200 for the Wii, $220 for the Xbox 360, $300 for the PlayStation 3, and $180 for the PlayStation Portable. Although NPD Group did not release exact statistics for Sony’s PlayStation 2, Wedbush Morgan’s Michael Pachter put the number at 40,000 units.
NPD Group listed the following totals of hardware sales for May 2010:
- Nintendo DS - 383,700
- Wii - 334,800
- Xbox 360 - 194,600
- PlayStation 3 - 154,500
- PlayStation Portable - 59,400
Red Dead Redemption and Super Mario Galaxy 2 combined to sell two million copies over the course of the month. Software sales for the month did not go as projected with THQ lowering its revenue expectations for UFC 2010. Additionally, Microsoft"s Alan Wake sold less than 200,000 units after spending multiple years in development. Electronic Arts’ Skate 3 for the Xbox 360 barely made the May software list.
