Back in August, Nvidia announced the RTX line of GPUs with real-time ray tracing and a major performance improvement over the previous generation. However, prices for those cards were somewhat steep, with even the RTX 2070 starting at $499. For those who have been waiting for a cheaper alternative, Nvidia today announced the RTX 2060 desktop GPU.
The company announced the card with a demonstration of Battlefield V running on RTX, showing off ray tracing while maintaining similar performance thanks to artificial intelligence. The RTX 2060 features 240 Tensor Cores capable of providing 52 teraflops for deep learning, plus 6GB of GDDR6 memory. As for ray tracing, it can produce 5 GigaRays per second.
Nvidia says the card"s performance is superior to that of the GTX 1070Ti from the previous generation, and 60% more powerful than the 1060. This is important because of the official retail price of the GTX 1070Ti is $449, and the RTX 2060 is set to start at $349. This is also much lower than the $499 retail price of the 2070, which should make ray tracing much more accessible to gamers.
Additionally, Nvidia announced a special promotion to help promote RTX. For those who buy either the RTX 2060 or 2070, the company will offer either Anthem or Battlefield V. The former will feature deep learning super-sampling (DLSS) when it launches, and the latter adds ray tracing as well, so you"ll be able to enjoy some benefits of RTX with either. Furthermore, if you buy an RTX 2080 or 2080Ti, you"ll get both titles.
The Nvidia GeForce RTX 2060 officially launches on January 15th, and, as mentioned above, it will start at $349.
