NVIDIA: Our support for Windows RT 'remains at a high level'

This week, Microsoft cut the prices of both of its Surface RT tablet permanently by $150 each. Those tablets have NVIDIA"s Tegra 3 processors inside, running Microsoft"s ARM-based Windows RT. While some believe that the days of Windows RT are numbered, an executive of NVIDIA remains bullish, at least publicly, about the OS"s future.

In a chat with Computerworld, Rene Haas, vice president of computing products at NVIDIA, said that the chipmaker"s support of Windows RT " ... remains at a high level and hasn"t changed." Haas added:

Surface RT is the very beginning of a long process and it"s the first shot in a changing landscape ... Microsoft is moving the entire Windows platform to something really mobile.

Hass is also encouraged by the new price cuts for the Surface RT, stating that NVIDIA employees regularly use the tablet with the Windows 8.1 preview version installed. That includes the new Outlook RT email client and Haas says, "We can use it to book meetings and other ways and it"s completely productive and a big item for us."

Haas says that NVIDIA"s new Tegra 4 processor will be used in upcoming future tablets running on Windows RT but would not confirm any specific PC maker or that will launch products with the chip inside.
