NVIDIA's Tegra chip helps to boost its financial results

NVIDIA has apparently made a successful change in its business. Up until a few years ago, the company was known for its powerful PC graphics processors. While NVIDIA continues to make PC graphics chips for both consumers and high end workstations, it has also added its ARM-based Tegra processors for smartphones and tablets.

The Tegra portion of the business has helped NVIDIA to bring in even more money than expected for the company. Today, the company announced that it generated revenues of $1.044 billion in the second quarter, up from $1.016 billion for the same period a year ago. The result beat the expectations of financial analysts, according to Reuters.

Microsoft announced its Surface tablet in June and revealed that the Windows RT version, which will launch on October 26th, will have a version of the Tegra mobile processor inside. Google"s recently launched Nexus 7 tablet also has the quad core version of the Tegra inside.

To be fair, NVIDIA has not left the PC graphics business, not by a long shot. The company started releasing new GeForce chips based on its Kepler architecture earlier this year. However, it stumbled a bit when Microsoft launched the Release Preview version of Windows 8. It took NVIDIA a few weeks after its launch to release non-beta versions of its GeForce graphics drivers.
