Microsoft"s Office apps for Android devices are dropping support for older versions of Google"s OS, including every release up to, and including, Android Lollipop, which is version 5.
The updated support page listing the system requirements for the Office mobile apps says that, starting on July 1, only the last four major versions of Android will be supported. Right now, that includes Android Pie, Oreo, Nougat, and Marshmallow, though this leaves questions up in the air in regards to what will happen once Android Q is released.
It"s worth noting that, originally, the page said that support for Android KitKat and Lollipop would continue until June, as spotted by Twitter user Tero Alhonen. Following our request for comment, the page was updated with the new information above, and we"ve reached out for further clarification on whether Marshmallow will be supported after the release of Q.
According to the latest Android usage stats shared by Google, versions 4.4 (KitKat) and 5 (Lollipop) collectively represent 21.4% of active Android devices, which means there"s a decent chance that many users will be impacted by this. If you"re still using the Office apps on one of these devices, you may want to consider an update at this point.
