Official Android 2.3 Gingerbread ROM for Samsung Galaxy S leaked

The lack of the Gingerbread version of Android on the many different versions of Samsung"s Galaxy S smartphone has been the source of much consternation for owners the world over. With Android"s fragmentation problem, along with Samsung"s apparent inability to get updates to carriers it"s all becoming a bit of a farce. Now though, assuming you"re using a European I9000 handset you can take matters into your own hands.

A post on Android Central brought to our attention a forum entry on the much-loved XDA Developers site detailing the release of a new, leaked build of 2.3.3 Gingerbread for the standard I9000 iteration of the Galaxy S. According to Android Central, this is the build you would receive if you happened to send your handset in for repair - presumably Samsung is updating handsets when they arrive at their repair centres.

Unfortunately however, if you"re one of the many US owners of one of the umpteen variations on the Galaxy S design then you"re still out of luck. As things stand you"ll be left waiting for the official release via your chosen carrier, whether that be Gingerbread or FroYo for those still not deemed worthy by Samsung.

Check out the video for a rundown of the leaked ROM, and head on over to XDA Developers for information on downloading and installing Gingerbread on your very own Galaxy S.
