Official Foursquare app for Windows 8 released

One of the most well known social networking apps has finally made its Windows 8 debut: Foursquare, which has already been released for Windows Phone 8, is now rolling out to Windows 8 PC and tablet owners via the Windows Store.

Microsoft first announced Windows 8 would receive an official Foursquare app at the BUILD 2013 conference in June. The Windows Store description for the newly launched app states that it will not only allow users to let others know they have "checked into" a certain location, but it will also offer ways to find new places to eat, shop and visit in a city.

The official Windows blog offers an example of how the new Foursquare app for Windows 8 can be used, written by Microsoft"s Brandon LeBlanc:

When you are looking at a place – like the Space Needle – you get all the details you need such as address (which you can click or tap to open in the Maps app on Windows 8) as well as website, Twitter account, phone number and more. On the lower left just below the information I just mentioned is the rating for the place (in the case of the Space Needle, it’s a 9.4). And above that is a grey square showing the hours the location is open. If you tap or click on this, a pop up will give you the full listing of hours.

Dennis Crowley, the co-founder and CEO of Foursquare, says his company worked closely with Microsoft on the creation and design of the new Windows 8 app and added that "this product is another example of the great things we can do together."

Microsoft also announced in late June during BUILD 2013 that official Facebook and Flipboard apps for Windows 8 are in the works, but there"s no word on when they will be released.
