Windows 8 may be getting a port of a very popular Internet messaging program, at least in some parts of the world. That would be ICQ, which already has a Windows Phone 7 application that launched in late 2011.
A recently launched YouTube video that shows an ad for the already available Windows Phone 7 ICQ app briefly shows a Windows 8-based tablet at the end that displays an ICQ logo. While the app itself is not actually shown running on the tablet, the video seems to make it clear that the current developers of the Windows Phone 7 app will be porting their efforts to the Windows 8 operating system.
The Israel-based Mirabilis created ICQ in 1996, and just two years later AOL bought the company and ICQ for $400 million. While ICQ had a lot of users worldwide at one point (in 2001, it claimed it had 100 million registered accounts), it slowly lost favor in the US and other parts of the world as other competing software and services came forward. However, ICQ still has a lot of users in Russia and other European counties. In 2010, AOL sold off ICQ to Russia"s Digital Sky Technologies for $187.5 million.
