Microsoft is planning to roll out a new OneDrive app for Windows 10 devices, built on its Universal Windows Platform, and the first version could arrive in the next few weeks.
Speaking with ZDNet"s Mary Jo Foley, Microsoft confirmed that its new UWP app is expected to launch sometime this quarter. A release this month is said to be "likely", but this isn"t set in stone.
However, it"s not yet clear if the new OneDrive app will include the much-anticipated support for placeholder files, traces of which have appeared in Windows 10 preview builds in recent months.
Placeholder functionality allows users to view all of their files - including not only those stored on a particular device, but also those in the cloud - in one place. This feature was previously available in OneDrive on Windows 8.1, but was removed in Windows 10, as it was believed that some users found it confusing.
Rival cloud storage service Dropbox announced plans last week to introduce placeholder functionality across all of its clients, but it seems Microsoft still isn"t ready to discuss its plans on that front. And according to The Verge"s Tom Warren, early previews of the new OneDrive UWP app don"t include placeholder files.
So it"s far from certain that Microsoft will restore the popular placeholder functionality when it launches the new app in the coming weeks - but even if it doesn"t appear in the first release, that doesn"t rule out the possibility of it coming in a future update.
