OnePlus 8 series officially announced with 5G, and up to a QHD+ 120Hz display

OnePlus held its online launch event for the OnePlus 8 series today, where it announced the new family of flagship devices. The phones had extensively leaked prior to the announcement, so there"s not much in the way of surprises here.

Starting with the OnePlus 8 Pro, one of the big highlights is the display, which has QHD+ (3168x1440) resolution and a 120Hz refresh rate. It also has a 240Hz touch refresh rate to make interactions smoother. It promises up to 1300 nits of brightness, 10-bit color, and a JNCD rating of 0.4, promising over a billion colors that are also accurate.

The camera is also a big point of focus for the OnePlus 8 Pro. It has a 48MP Sony IMX689 sensor for the main camera, and another 48MP camera, this time with Sony"s IMX586 sensor, serving as an ultra-wide camera. There"s also a 3x telephoto camera and a color filter camera, which is meant to make it easier for users to get shots with filter-like effects.

For video, the camera supports HDR recording with three levels of exposure being merged together. There"s also both OIS and EIS for stable recordings. There are also three microphones for better stereo sound recording, and they enable features like zoom audio. The OnePlus 8 Pro also has Dolby stereo speakers, which promises more immersion for videos and games.

Other specs here are what you"d expect and align with previous leaks. It has a Snapdragon 865 5G chipset, up to 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of internal storage. The battery is 4,510mAh in size, and it supports wireless charging for the first time, at 30W. Reverse wireless charging is also supported. OnePlus has also improved the haptic engine.

OnePlus has worked on software for this phone, and OxygenOS will bring a revamped dark mode alongside the OnePlus 8, along with features like Live Caption. OnePlus 8 Pro users will also get a free 3-month trial of Google One with 100GB of cloud storage. Additionally, the phones will be Amazon Alexa-ready.

The OnePlus 8 Pro will come in three colors: Onyx Black, Ultramarine Blue, and Glacier Green.

As for the OnePlus 8, it"s meant to be a more compact phone, coming in at 180g in weight and 8mm thick. At 6.55 inches, it has a slightly larger display than the iPhone 11 Pro Max, but it"s not as wide, and it"s barely wider than the regular iPhone 11 Pro, which has a 5-8-inch display.

That display is just Full HD+, and the peak brightness is lower, at 1100 nits, but it still has HDR10+ certification and a JNCD rating of 0.4, so color accuracy should still be pretty solid. The refresh rate is 90Hz, which isn"t quite as smooth as 120Hz, but still better than 60Hz.

The camera setup has three cameras - a 48MP main camera, using Sony"s IMX586 sensor, a 16MP ultra-wide lens, and a macro camera. It also features OIS and EIS for video stabilization.

As for the rest of the specs, it"s pretty similar to the Pro model. It has a Snapdragon 865 chipset, up to 12GB of RAM, and 256GB of storage. The battery is slightly smaller, at 4,300mAh, and there"s no wireless charging here.

The OnePlus 8 will also be coming to Verizon for the first time, called OnePlus 8 5G UW, and it exclusively works on Verizon"s mmWave 5G network.

In terms of colors, the OnePlus 8 will come in Glacial Green, and a new Interstellar Glow color. OnePlus says this color looks different from every angle, thanks to having color on a film under the display, but also on the glass itself.

As for pricing, the OnePlus 8 will cost $699 with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and that will come in Glacial Green. If you opt more 12GB of RAM and 256 of storage, you"ll have to pay $799 for the Interstellar Glow model. As for the OnePlus 8 Pro, you"ll be paying $899 for the 8GB/128GB model in Glacial Green, and $999 for the 12GB/256GB in Onyx Black or Ultramarine Blue. Sales will go live on April 21 in Europe, with pre-orders available right now. In the U.S., the phone will go on sale on April 29.

OnePlus also announced a few accessories, including cases designed in partnership with graffiti artist André Saraiva. Each case will come with a special NFC card with an "extra surprise" when you scan them with your phone. There are only 10,000 available, though.

Finally, there"s the OnePlus Bullets Wireless Z, the company"s new wireless earbuds. They promise 10 hours of listening with 10 minutes of charging, and over 20 hours of listening from a full charge. They will cost $49.95.
