OnePlus today announced its fall flagship device, the 6T. Once again promising to Never Settle, the device is the first from the firm to be offered by a carrier in the United States. You"ll be able to buy it from over 5,600 T-Mobile stores, which is quite a far cry from having to win an invitation to buy a phone online. It will also be compatible with Verizon.
While that"s certainly a big deal, there are also some major improvements over the OnePlus 6. The 6T has a feature called Screen Unlock, which puts a fingerprint sensor in the display. OnePlus said that it planned to introduced the feature with the 5T, but it didn"t match the user experience at the time. The firm says that the 6T is the first in-display fingerprint sensor in the U.S., and it"s the fastest in the world at 0.34 seconds.
The 6.41-inch display is AMOLED, and there are five display calibration settings. The resolution is still 1080p, but it has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio and a "teardrop" notch. Brightness is over 600 nits, so there"s a lot that"s new with the display.
The dual rear camera includes 16MP and 20MP sensors with an f/1.7 aperture. There"s also a new night mode, which works differently from other phones that can take up to five seconds to capture a photo. OnePlus says that with its night mode, it will only take two seconds to get a great image. The software feature, which keeps the shutter open to take in more light, is also coming to the OnePlus 6.
The rear camera"s portrait mode is also getting improvements, with studio lighting, something that we"ve seen from various other devices. OnePlus brought in Kevin Abosch - a concept artist that specializes in portrait lighting - to help develop the feature though. Abosch took to the stage to say that mobile photography has "just leveled up".
Just as you"d expect, it"s powered by a Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform, backed up by 8GB RAM and 256GB storage. That means that it supports 1.2Gbps 4G LTE connectivity with the Snapdragon X20 modem, although markets that actually support those speeds are few and far between. Indeed, performance is a huge focus, and that includes gaming. With a feature called Smart Boost, load time should be down by 20%. There"s a 23% battery size increase, as it now comes in at 3,700mAh.
T-Mobile will be having a launch event at 5pm today in New York, and that will be the first place that you can buy the phone. The device will start at $549 for 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It"s $579 for 8GB RAM and 128GB storage, and $629 for the specced out 8GB RAM and 256GB storage model.
T-Mobile is also offering $300 off the price of the device with an eligible trade-in. Those eligible devices include OnePlus devices going back to the One, iPhones going back to the 6, and more.
