A few weeks ago, OnePlus launched the X, a new handset slotting in to its range below the flagship-class Two, which it released earlier this year. But despite coming several weeks after Google officially launched Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the OnePlus X was released with a version of its in-house OxygenOS based on the older Android 5.1.1 Lollipop.
OnePlus has revealed when it plans to upgrade two of its devices to Marshmallow - but it seems those who purchased its newest handset will face the longest wait.
OnePlus said on its blog that it isn"t ready "to promise specific dates yet", but it has outlined the broad strokes of its upgrade plans:
- OnePlus One will get an Android 6.0-based version of Cyanogen OS in the first quarter of 2016. While a "community build" of OxygenOS is available for the One, the company says it will only update that build for the device "when time allows".
- OnePlus 2 "will also be updated in Q1", including the new standard Marshmallow API for the fingerprint sensor.
- OnePlus X has not been given any estimated delivery time for an Android 6.0-based update, which suggests that owners of that device may have to wait beyond Q1 2016. The company says it"s "working hard to bring Marshmallow as soon as possible to the OnePlus X, and will update you on a time frame at a later time."
Meanwhile, OnePlus came under fire this week from a Google engineer, who said the OEM was using non-standard resistors in its USB Type-C cables and adaptors, warning people to avoid using them with other devices, due to the possibility of damage to USB hubs, chargers, and even PC USB ports.
