It was only yesterday that OnePlus unveiled its latest handset, the OnePlus 5. The handset features an all new design and offers a Snapdragon 835 processor, 6GB or 8GB RAM, 5.5-inch 1080p display, and most importantly, a dual rear camera with a 20MP and 16MP sensor. With its latest flagship, the firm also retains its proprietary charging feature, Dash Charge. While it was able to best Google"s Pixel from last year, the firm has now pitted the charging technology against a new competitor, Samsung"s Galaxy S8.
In the test above, OnePlus shows its handset"s charging prowess against Samsung"s by showing how efficiently and more quickly it can charge during a daily commute. This is a particularly interesting test because while most phones will charge quickly while laying dormant, they will actually fail to charge quickly when under a high load like when navigating using GPS. Luckily, Dash Charge does not suffer from this problem, charging the OnePlus 5 up to 43%, while the Samsung was only able to get to 12%.
Just to be fair, OnePlus also shows off a demonstration of its Dash Charge technology while the phones are inactive. In this test, the Samsung Galaxy S8 does much better, getting to 39% in around 30 minutes. The OnePlus 5 is still able to best this by charging up to 58% in the same amount of time. While the percentages are close the second go around, one has to remember that the OnePlus handset is actually packing a larger battery, so the percentage difference becomes that much more impressive, charging up 1,914mAh versus the Samsung"s 1,170mAh.
If there is a downside to OnePlus" technology is that it is proprietary, and it not only requires a compatible charger, but also a compatible cable. Since this is the case, you won"t be able to walk into your local store to pick one up if you lose it. If you"re looking to pick up a spare, you can always get them from the OnePlus online store, with the Dash Power Adapter costing $19.95, the Dash Type-C cable costing $14.95, and the Dash Car Charger costing $29.95. You can also pick up the newly revealed OnePlus 5 from the website, but at the moment the 8GB RAM model is sold out and you will also require a special code to enter the pre-sale event.
