Only 33% of Windows Phone users are English speakers

Windows Phone doesn"t have a lot of clout when it comes to global market share but it is doing quite well in some markets. Adduplex teased some upcoming data that will be released in March. According to this, Italian, Spanish and Chinese are languages of choice when it comes to Windows Phone locales.

Earlier reports showed the same statistics, with market penetration for Microsoft"s mobile platform being a lot higher in European countries and other non-English speaking regions across the world. According to that info the highest adoption was in Italy at around 14%. Of course this information is not foolproof. A different report said that Windows Phone had an even larger market share in Poland with 16 percent. The info we see here comes from Adduplex, a global ad network used by hundreds of developers and millions of users every month, so it definitely gives us a pretty good image on the ecosystem as a whole.

As you can see, the localization data is showing that over 15% of users have their Windows Phones set to Italian. Of course English is leading with 33% but that"s obviously spread across many markets including North America and the UK. Spanish ends up a close 3rd with 13% but this is also spread out across markets. The Chinese market seems to be adopting Windows Phone as well with 8% of folks having set that as their primary language.

As Alan Mendelevich from Adduplex points out, the graph above shows very clearly what languages and markets developers should be concentrating on. With no new devices being launched and no announcements about any major upcoming Windows Phone OS updates it will be interesting to see how the markets react in the following weeks and to see if Microsoft and Nokia can sustain the momentum that"s been building around their platform. But, of course, we"ll have to wait a bit longer for that data.
