Opera has announced that the latest developer build of its popular browser now has support for Google’s Chromecast media sharing device. The feature was added due to rising popularity of Google’s device over the last year, and to gain feature parity with the world’s most popular browser, Google Chrome.
By default, the feature is not enabled in the developer build; in order to switch it on, you must head to Settings (or Preferences on macOS), then click Browser, User interface, and tick “Enable Chromecast Support”.
Once enabled you can cast YouTube videos by pressing the cast icon found in a video’s player controls. Alternatively, you can select Cast from the page’s context menu, or from the O-Menu on Windows and Linux, or the View menu on macOS. It"s possible to cast videos, tabs, as well as the full desktop.
With the new developer build, it’s also possible to pull up the currency conversion values between fiat and cryptocurrencies. It won’t help with all cryptocurrencies but will help you find the current price the most popular ones: Bitcoin, Bitcoin Cash, Ethereum, and Litecoin.
The introduction of Chromecast support is fairly important because of the sheer number of the devices in use. Google recently revealed that it had sold 55 million Chromecasts, which is up from 30 million in July 2016. Until now, you had to use a workaround in order to enable Chromecast support in Opera, but going forward the browser will have support for it out of the box.
