Opera launches PC Apps Hub, listing what it thinks is handy software

According to Opera, Windows users are experiencing difficulty in finding reliable software online. In order to combat this, it has launched what it calls the PC Apps Hub, a go-to place to find reliable software which users can download, safe in the knowledge that the listed apps won’t screw up their Windows installation.

The complete list includes WinRAR, 7-Zip, Avast Free Antivirus 2017, Avira Free Antivirus 2017, Adobe Reader, Foxit Reader, Adobe Flash Player, .NET Framework 4.7, Java SE Runtime 8, GIMP, IrfanView, Opera, Skype, ALLPlayer, K-Lite Code Pack Full, Spotify, Driver Easy, Driver Booster, and BitTorrent.

In a blog post, Błażej Kaźmierczak, from Opera wrote:

“Based on Opera employees’ preferences, software popularity and quality, we have selected and gathered apps into one place for your downloading convenience. Unlike other hubs, here, and without ads and hidden obligations or downloads, you will find a catalogue with clear, simple previews of fundamental apps we trust

The Opera Apps Hub fixes all the above by providing you with a selection of the essential applications for your PC. This allows you to easily download quality software straight from its developer. We have decided to limit application selection for each category and we have spent a lot of time thinking what to keep and what to keep outside to make your choice a lot easier, so you could start working on your computer almost immediately with apps that help you perform your daily tasks. For this same reason, we want to keep the total number of apps as low as possible too.”

If you’re thinking about downloading software from the hub you should be aware that you might not want it all. The codecs provided by K-Lite, for example, are already bundled into players like VLC and a lot of the codecs it provides even work out the box on Windows 10. Additionally, if you’re rocking the latest version of Windows, you might not want to run the antivirus selections and instead stick with Windows Defender.
