During the Qualcomm Snapdragon Technology Summit, OPPO was on stage to announce that it would soon be releasing the OPPO Reno3 Pro sporting a Snapdragon 765G with 5G support. Today, that announcement became official, at least for customers in China, with the release of the OPPO Reno3 series.
As expected, the Reno3 Pro is the more powerful of the two devices, powered by the Snapdragon 765G chipset with support for dual-mode 5G. To get the best 5G coverage, the Reno3 Pro has 10 cellular antennas along every edge of the phone, so the signal doesn"t get blocked by your hands regardless of how you hold the phone. The phone can also combine Wi-Fi and 5G for even faster speeds.
It has up to 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage, and a 4025mAh battery with support for OPPO"s VOOC 4.0 charging technology, so it can be charged from 3% to 50% in just 20 minutes. In terms of software, the OPPO Reno3 Pro will come with ColorOS 7, OPPO"s custom UI built on top of Android 10.
The camera setup on the Reno3 Pro has also been improved, with a total of four sensors. The main camera is Sony"s 48MP IMX586 sensor, and there"s a 13MP telephoto lens, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle sensor, and a 2MP black and white sensor. It comes with what OPPO calls Ultra Steady 2.0, combining optical and electronic image stabilization to make videos and photos clearer. OPPO has also added stabilization to the wide-angle camera. The front-facing camera is 32MP.
The display on the Reno3 Pro also promises a pretty good experience, with Full HD+ resolution, a 90Hz refresh rate and a peak brightness of 1100 nits. It"s a 6.5-inch display with minimal bezels, offering a 92.1% screen-to-body ratio, and it has a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera. Under that screen is a fingerprint sensor that OPPO says has been made a lot thinner, going from 2.95mm in the previous generation to just 0.266mm. This helps the phone achieve its 7.7mm thickness, making it the world"s thinnest 5G smartphone.
The Reno3 Pro will come in four color options - Sunrise Impression, Starry Blue, Moonlight Black, and Misty White. There will also be a special edition called Classic Blue, result of a partnership with Pantone. Classic Blue is Pantone"s Color of the Year for 2020, and this model attempts to recreate it as closely as possible.
Meanwhile, the OPPO Reno3 shares a lot with the Reno3 Pro, with some key differences. The chipset is MediaTek"s octa-core Dimensity 1000, which also supports dual-mode 5G. The battery size is the same 4025mAh, and it also supports VOOC 4.0 charging. The RAM is also the same between the two models, but the internal storage is just 128GB on the regular Reno3.
It also has four cameras, but the main sensor is Sony"s IMX686 with 64MP resolution. Then there"s an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a black and white sensor, and a fourth lens for portrait shots. The display is also just 60Hz, and instead of a punch-hole cutout for the front-facing camera, it has a waterdrop notch. It"s also slightly smaller, at 6.44 inches. There"s still a fingerprint sensor under the display, though.
Both the OPPO Reno3 Pro and Reno3 will be available in the 8GB+128GB variants on December 31st in China. The Reno3 Pro will start at ¥3999, roughly $572, while the Reno3 will start at ¥3399, or $485. The 12GB+256GB of the Reno3 Pro will launch on January 10 for ¥4499 ($642), and the 12GB+128GB model of the regular Reno3 will be ¥3699 ($528), though it"s not clear when it will launch.
