Nearly 25 years ago, System Shock was released, giving gamers a very technical world to discover. While many may have forgotten about the game, Nightdive Studios was able to acquire the rights to the game and produce an Enhanced Edition for modern PCs. Now, the game has been updated, bringing better graphics and more features.
The development team behind the game is now making the Source Port Update available, with one of the benefits being that it ups the resolution of the game up to 4K. Players will have the option of choosing between hi-resolution or original assets. There are also the various quality of life improvements, like finally being able to use the mouse to look around and being able to rebind and remap the keyboard, mouse and joystick commands.
The game will now also support mods, allowing fans to build and flesh out their own world. The aforementioned additions are just a sample of what has been added in the latest update, but you can check out the full list down below.
- Higher resolution support up to 4K widescreen mode
- Mouselook support
- Rebindable keyboard/mouse/joystick commands
- Adapted to Nightdive"s KEX engine
- Support for both Direct3D and OpenGL
- Option to switch between hi-resolution Mac assets and the original DOS assets
- Official support for fan missions and fan mods
- New unified options menu that allows changing preferences before gameplay

The team was able to make all of the improvements because it found the original source code for the game. You can purchase the fully updated System Shock Enhanced Edition for $4.99 from Steam or if you already own it, you"ll get the new update for free.
