When we reviewed the YotaPhone we saw that the rear e-ink display was more than just a novelty but it didn"t justify the high price at the time of reviewing. The always-on rear display not only helped to provide useful information, but it "makes sense" in terms of the various use cases. Since then, however, we haven"t seen any other manufacturer try to take on the task of producing a dual-screen device. That was until now, though, with Chinese manufacturer Oukitel looking to release a dual-screen device within the next month.
The Oukitel U6 will have an e-ink display on the rear of the phone, much in the same way as the YotaPhone. It also shares similar specs, with a 5.0" front display and 4.7" rear e-ink display. Oukitel isn"t quite certain of this yet, but it may also be carrying the ten-core MediaTek MT6797 SoC. It will run Android 5.1 Lollipop out of the box, and our sources at Oukitel are confident that the device will be entering mass production by August.
How the market will respond to this will be quite interesting, because if Oukitel"s historical pricing will reflect how the U6 will be priced, then this dual-screen device may cost under $300 -- severely undercutting the YotaPhone as well, which recently had a crowdfunding campaign to officially launch the device within the United States.
This isn"t the first time Oukitel has turned heads: not too long ago we reported on Oukitel"s whopping 10,000 mAh smartphone which they also plan on releasing in the near future. In the meantime, the header image (which can be clicked on for a higher resolution) is an exclusive look at what the phone will look like.
