Using your iPhone or iPad to view, edit and resend a file attachment can be difficult, since iOS doesn’t expose the file system. Now, Outlook for iOS adds simple round-trip editing using the Microsoft Office apps for iOS.
Finding your attachments was already easy in Outlook for iOS, which has a convenient Attachments tab that lists all files received by you, or sent by you. With today’s update, after you"ve opened the file from Outlook and edited the file in Word, Excel or PowerPoint, just hit the back button and the newly-edited file will be automatically added to your email reply.
And if you originate your Word doc, PowerPoint file or Excel sheet from inside one of the apps, just touch the “Send with Outlook” button in the share function.
Using a file service like OneDrive is also an option in Outlook for iOS. But Microsoft says that, while the most elegant solution is to “save and share the file from OneDrive, sometimes an attachment is necessary.” But if you prefer to use a file service instead of attachments, Outlook for iOS also integrates with Dropbox, Box, Google Drive and iCloud Drive. Outlook for Android doesn"t have Google Drive integration for the time being.
Microsoft appears to be making swift progress on its mobile apps, having acquired startups when necessary. In addition to purchasing Sunrise calendar as the possible basis of its future mobile calendar, Outlook for iOS and Android are a rebranded versions of the Acompli app Microsoft acquired last year.
The Android version of Outlook will be updated “in the next couple of months,” according to Microsoft.
