Outlook.com hits 10 million users, SkyDrive gets updated

Not that long ago, Microsoft took the covers off of its new email service, Outlook.com and since then, users have been flocking to the platform to the tune of over 10 million users to date. The tremendous growth indicates that the consumer approves of the new domain and the features that come with it. We did an extensive hands on with the new service which you can read about here: Everything You Need to Know About Outlook.com.

During the reveal, we also highlighted SkyDrive"s update UI as well and Neowin got its hands on the new Metro modern UI for the SkyDrive web app and came away pleased with the improved workflow and matching decor when compared to Outlook.com which you can read about here.

Over on the Inside Skydrive blog, Chris Jones gave even more information about the upcoming Skydrive changes. SkyDrive apps are officially coming out of the preview stage with Chris saying:

Over the past months, we’ve shared our approach to building versatile personal cloud storage that can scale to a billion people. Today, we’re excited to announce the next step towards that vision, and how this brings the SkyDrive desktop apps out of preview:

  • SkyDrive.com - New, modern design for desktop and tablet browsers with instant search, contextual toolbar, thumbnail multi-select, drag-and-drop organization, and HTML5 sorting
  • SkyDrive for Windows desktop & OS X - Faster uploads for people around the world and tons of bug and performance improvements under the hood
  • SkyDrive for Android - A new app that lets you access, upload and share from Android phones
  • SkyDrive for developers – Apps built using our SkyDrive API can now store or access any type of file in a person’s SkyDrive, plus there"s a new, easy-to-use file picker API for websites (similar to our file picker for Windows 8 apps)

The post over on the SkyDrive blog goes into incredible detail about all of the new changes and has something for everyone (consumers and developers). Of course, you can watch the video above as well to get a fantastic look at what the updated platform will offer too.

You can check now to see if you have the new SkyDrive updates but know that the update is rolling out over the next 24 hours, so be patient.

Finally, Neowin got a nice shoutout on the blog for our hosting (and your asking) the Outlook.com team anything. The team is still pouring over your questions and digging up the answers but stay tuned, that post will be up shortly.
