Ouya ends Kickstarter campaign with ~$8.6 million funded

In July, the makers of a new game console launched their Kickstarter fund raising campaign. The console was called Ouya, and it was conceived of as a tiny hardware device, running a version of Android, that would download game titles and cost just $99.

Apparently, a lot of people like that idea. Last night, the Kickstarter campaign for Ouya ended with nearly $8.6 million raised, well above the goal of $950,000. In between the start and end of the campaign, Ouya has announced that the console will have support for up to four controllers at once, games coming from big publishers such as Namco Bandai and Square Enix as well as smaller indie developers, and support for streaming services such as OnLive.

People who backed the Kickstarter campaign will receive their Ouya consoles in March 2013. The company has now started taking pre-orders for non-Kickstarter backers at its official website and will ship those consoles in April 2013. People who pre-order the Ouya now will have to pay a little more. The company is charging US orders $109 for a console plus one controller, all the way up to $199 for the console and four controllers.
